Participants will follow Grant and Lee’s lead historian Kathleen Hulser on a virtual walkthrough of the upcoming exhibition. A panel discussion with Dr. Hulser and historian James McElhinney will explore the following themes: the military careers of Generals Grant and Lee and a cast of West Point graduates, including William Tecumseh Sherman, Philip Sheridan, George Custer, Jubal Early, Abner Doubleday and James Longstreet; the shifting role of the US military through westward expansion, the Civil War and Reconstruction; Grant’s pioneering use of federal power for civil rights and post-war reconstruction; the power of the “Lost Cause” myth and its grip on American history. Teachers will preview plans for student and teacher programs to accompany Grant and Lee, and will tour the N-YHS library collections and the Henry Luce III Center for the Study of American Culture.
