Goalball Tournament 2007

As the new season approaches, here is a little retrospective of last season's team.

WHAT IS GOALBALL?

Goalball is a three-a-side team game developed for visually impaired players.  Two teams of three play the game.  All players are blindfolded to enable blind,  vision impaired and sighted athletes to play together.

Goalball was invented in 1946 by an Austrian Hanz Lorencezen and a German, Sett Reindle.  The game was used for sport and rehabilitation for the WW II blind veterans.

The game of Goallball developed over the years, gaining international acceptance and became a Paraolympic Sport in 1980.

The ball contains internal bells,
which help locate  it during play.

The object of the game is to score, by bowling the ball along the floor so that it crosses the goal line of the opposing team.

The defending team has to prevent the ball going in to their goal by stopping it while remaining in their team area.

They must then try to control the ball and attack by bowling the ball back again thereby trying to score in the other goal.

So that all players have an equal opportunity, all team players must wear blackened eyeshades at all times through out the game.
